MUAR: To welcome the Year of the Dragon, a freelance bookkeeper has showcased her creative side by making mini 3D dragon biscuits that look too cute to eat.
Chen Woei Wei, 40, spent at least two hours producing a small batch of her German potato biscuits for Chinese New Year as it required a lot of meticulous shaping, carving and assembling. So cute: Chen showing her dragon biscuits at her home in Bukit Pasir, Muar.
“I usually make festive biscuits for my loved ones according to the Chinese zodiac sign.
“Last year, I made rabbit biscuits as it was the Year of the Rabbit. This time round, I decided to make these 3D biscuits to welcome the Year of the Dragon.
“The 3D biscuits were made from potato flour, multi-purpose flour, butter and sugar. I used green tea, purple yam and pumpkin powder as food colouring to make them more attractive,” she said when interviewed at her home in Bukit Pasir here.
Chen said she made the dragon biscuits in green, pink and yellow to make them look auspicious.
She said the most challenging part of the process was making the tiny parts such as the dragon’s eyes, belly, limbs and horns separately using a carving tool.
The dough was then shaped into round balls as the base or body of the dragon before she attached the parts.
Some of the parts had to be pre-baked before attaching them onto the ball-shaped dough to make the “dragons” look more convincing, she said, adding that she put in extra effort to keep the design cute.
She said she had to also keep a close eye on the oven to ensure that the biscuits would not burn and lose their vibrant colours.
“After making them and posting photos on my social media account, many friends have been asking whether I am selling the biscuits.
“I had to politely decline as it is too labour-intensive to produce them for sale – I am already juggling my home-based job, taking care of my children and my love for baking.
“I am only making the biscuits for my loved ones to enjoy to add more cheer to the upcoming festive celebrations,” said Chen, a mother of three.
