8,500 complaints lodged with MBPJ over six months

Out of 8,547 complaints received by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) between January and June this year, 922 were regarding obstructions on pedestrian walkways and parking bays.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said the root of the problem was the irresponsible attitude of business owners who placed traffic cones, cement bollards and other objects to reserve parking spots.

“To deal with this problem, our enforcers conduct periodic confiscation of the items and issue compound notices accordingly,” he said at MBPJ’s full board meeting.

He said the second highest complaint, with 791 cases, was about damaged streetlights.

“Among the causes was short circuits in the feeder pillars.

“MBPJ, through our Engineering Department, has taken the initiative to change the existing high-pressure sodium vapour lights to LED as well as the underground cables using funds from the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris) allocation,” he added.

Damaged roads and potholes ranked third, with 635 complaints received.

“This is probably because these roads are more than 10 years old with high traffic volume, frequent use by heavy vehicles, and excess water collection,” said Mohamad Azhan.

So far, 5,199 complaints (61%) have been resolved, 1,992 (23%) are under department action while the remaining 1,356 (16%) are at the long-term resolution stage.

“Between January and June last year, there were 7,833 complaints recorded.

“Of these, 7,372 complaints have been resolved, while 461 are still in the long-term resolution stage, which involves a tender/quotation process or litigation,” the mayor added.

From January to June this year, the most complaints were received from Zone 3, which is the PJU 5 area (Kota Damansara) with 1,285, followed by Zone 4 (PJU 1A) with 557 and Zone 8 (SS2) with 440.
