MOTORISTS are urging Klang Municipal Council (MPK) to resolve the flash flood issue that frequently occurs at Jalan Teluk Pulai flyover.
Flash floods would occur there after just a half hour of downpour.
Ming Abdullah, 30, who uses that route, said floodwaters would cut off traffic at the start of the bridge, when waters rose to knee level.
He said motorists had to then make a U-turn and take an alternative route such as Lorong Sepat 3 in Taman Teluk Pulai.
“Most of the time, motorists would continue on the route.
“A few cars would stall after going through the floodwater.
“Once the rain subsides, the floodwaters will take more than half hour to recede,” he added.
Constructed in mid-2000, the flyover, which spans 287m over a rail track, is an important link to Teluk Pulai Komuter station for many residents.
Trader Halim Azwan, 35, said a short-term solution was to desilt the drains, to eliminate obstruction and ensure rainwater could flow better.
“Over the last three years, the flash floods have been a bane to road users.
“It is time that MPK widen the drains in the area,” he said.
Another motorist, Wong Chee Meng, 50, said flash floods at the flyover was a concern as the monsoon season was near and the level of rainfall was expected to increase because of a change in weather patterns.
“Flash floods is an inconvenience and danger to all road users,” he said.
MPK Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said the council was aware of the issue, adding that there were plans to raise the base of the bridge.
“According to the local council’s Engineering Department, the low-lying area impedes the flow of surface runoff and causes the water to collect there, leading to flash floods.
“Discussions are ongoing for allocation of funds to upgrade the infrastructure,” said Norfiza.
