TOLL charges could apply soon for driving up to Genting Highlands, according to Sin Chew Daily and China Press.
The dailies reported that the toll collection will be managed by Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Genting Malaysia responsible for maintaining the company’s road infrastructure.
In its report, China Press said the company’s consulting adviser Fang Chun Hua confirmed the construction of two toll booths at Gohtong Jaya and Genting Sempah.
Motorists may be required to pay a one-way toll fee when travelling uphill from Karak or Batang Kali, with no charges imposed on their way down.
However, she said no specific details regarding the toll amount, potential discount or the implementation date have been finalised.
She dismissed rumours about the matter, adding that discussions are still ongoing and an official announcement will be made once decisions are reached.
Fang noted that Genting Malaysia has been privately maintaining the highland roads since their construction in the mid-1960s.
Lingkaran Cekap is responsible for various roadworks, including slope maintenance, landslide prevention, fallen tree clearance, weed clearing, sewage system upkeep, streetlight maintenance and, most importantly, road maintenance, she said.Meanwhile, the Pahang government said there was no discussion regarding the proposed toll as it was never raised at the state exco meetings.
State unity, tourism and culture committee chairman Leong Yu Man said he is gathering further details about the proposed toll.
