Enhanced recycling hub for Shah Alam

Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has relaunched its Community Recycling Centre in Section 2, in conjunction with the city’s 23rd anniversary celebration.

Shah Alam mayor Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid said the renewed facility served as a local recycling hub aimed at making “reuse” an integral part of community life.

“It’s more than just a recycling hub; it is a sustainable living laboratory.

The mini library at the recycling centre, which features furniture made out of recycled materials and pre-loved books donated by the public.

“MBSA intends to promote environmental awareness, sustainable food waste management and knowledge-sharing within the community at the centre,” he said.

MBSA in collaboration with Tetra Pak Malaysia, also built a mini library within the centre.

What sets this reading booth apart is that it is constructed from recycled materials, including 255,000 beverage cartons, that can withstand the rigours of changing weather conditions.

“This unique reading booth stands as testament to the community’s commitment for knowledge-sharing and environmental sustainability.

“The books here are pre-loved books contributed by the public to recycling centres throughout Shah Alam,” said Nor Fuad.

The centre is also a collection point for used cooking oil.

MBSA partnered with Entomal Biotech Sdn Bhd to introduce a food waste composting programme using black soldier fly (BSF) technique to process food waste into compost.

The target is to accept one tonne of food waste per month.

Nor Fuad said MBSA had partnered with UiTM Shah Alam in its “Free Single Use Plastic Community” programme, aimed at raising awareness among UiTM students on the elimination of single-use plastics.

The broader aim, he said, was achieving a single-use plastic-free environment by 2030.

At the event, the city council also contributed RM20,000 to UiTM for its programme.

Also present were MBSA Corporate and Public Relations head Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif and Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Department director Mohd Azmi Amer Khan, Tetra Pak Malaysia environment director Terrynz Tan, Entomal Biotech director Prof Dr Datuk Azman Ching, UiTM Green Centre director Assoc Prof Dr Arnis Asmat and MBSA councillor Tengku Ahmad Tengku Kasim.
