Partnership to tap green energy, build EV charging points in Selangor

Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) (MBI Selangor) signed a memorandum of understanding with clean energy solutions provider Gentari Sdn Bhd to explore the state’s renewable and sustainable energy landscape.

The two parties will collaborate to harness Gentari’s expertise in renewable energy, hydrogen and green mobility, as well as other potential ventures.

The signing ceremony, during the Selangor International Business Summit 2023, underscored MBI Selangor’s dedication to achieving its sustainability goals outlined in the First Selangor Plan 2025 (RS-1).

Introduced in July 2022, RS-1 is to position Selangor as an attractive hub for clean energy investments in Malaysia.

“The Selangor government firmly endorses the International Energy Agency’s bold 2050 net-zero emission objective,” said Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari at the signing ceremony.

“We remain relentlessly committed in seeking opportunities for a low-carbon footprint transition.

“The collaboration with Gentari arrives at a pivotal moment, as we seek to unlock the potential of Selangor’s renewable energy landscape, with a target of achieving a total energy generation capacity of 1GW by 2030.

“This will bring us one step closer to our 45% carbon emissions reduction target.”

“Through this MOU, MBI aims to widen its clean energy horizons in pursuit of the state’s de-carbonisation objectives.

“This move signifies a shift towards a high-value green economy and aligns with the Federal Government’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, to address the socio-economic well-being of its residents,” he said.

Gentari deputy chief executive officer and chief green mobility officer Shah Yang Razalli said: “By collaborating with MBI Selangor, we hope to unlock Selangor’s vast potential in sustainable energy.

“Our focus on innovative solutions in renewable energy, hydrogen and green mobility aligns perfectly with the goals of Selangor government’s RS-1 to transition the state into a sustainable powerhouse, to achieve the 1GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.”

The three main focuses of the collaboration are the development of solar energy, the expansion of the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles (EVs), and the strategic planning for a hydrogen economy in Selangor.

The collaboration, as outlined in the MoU, is focused on the potential deployment of 300MW of solar initiatives, encompassing on-site solutions for commercial and industrial use, ground-mounted installations, and floating solar arrays, to be implemented over the next three years.

Gentari and MBI Selangor are collaborating to build a comprehensive network of EV charging points across the state, to support the adoption of EVs in Selangor.

This will help Selangor meet its ambitious goal of having 10,000 EV charging points by 2025, similar to the Federal Government’s objective under the Low-Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021- 2030.

As a starting point, this collaboration is actively exploring the setting-up of charging hubs in strategic locations, including Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Klang, within the next 12 months.

This strategic initiative also closely aligns with the objectives of Selangor government, which has set a target to electrify 40% of the state government’s fleet.
