Floods worsen in Kelantan and Perak

KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Kelantan and Perak is worsening, marked by an increase in evacuees at relief centres (PPS) yesterday. Meanwhile, signs of recovery are evident in Selangor and Terengganu.

In KELANTAN, a total of 4,520 victims from 1,428 families were evacuated to 12 PPS in Tanah Merah and Pasir Mas as at 6pm, according to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) Info Bencana portal.

Meanwhile, according to the public Infobanjir website, the water level at Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang stood at 10.3m as at 6pm, which is 1.3m above its danger level.

The danger level for the river is 9m.

In PERAK, as at 6pm, the number of victims increased from 30 to 80 from 25 families and they have been evacuated to a PPS in Hilir Perak.

In TERENGGANU, the number of victims dropped from 1,427 to 1,320 in 16 PPS across five districts due to improved weather conditions.

As at 6pm, the highest number of flood victims in the state was in Dungun (985), followed by Marang (252), Setiu (48), Hulu Terengganu (nine) and Besut (two).

In SELANGOR, according to the JKM Info Bencana site, the number of flood victims in the state continued to drop from a total of 49 victims in the afternoon to 37 victims as at 6pm yesterday.

There are two PPS for flood victims in the state, namely Klang and Kuala Selangor.

According to the portal publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my, the Sungai Binjai in Pekan Meru, Klang, Sungai Buloh in Parit Mahang, Kuala Selangor and Sungai Selangor in Rantau Panjang Selangor had exceeded the alert level.

In SANDAKAN, The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued an advisory yesterday on tropical storm “Jelawat”, which is moving westwards approximately 396km northeast of Davao, the Philippines.

According to MetMalaysia, the distance of the tropical storm from the nearest Malaysian town is about 1,254km northeast of Sandakan, Sabah.

The storm is moving at a speed of 20km per hour and could reach a maximum of 65km per hour.

It does not pose any significant threat to Malaysia, MetMalaysia said.
