Four held over RM6mil bribe

PUTRAJAYA: A chief executive officer was among four men arrested for allegedly seeking and accepting bribes amounting to more than RM6mil.

It is learnt that two others are consultants of a football association of a northern state.

The identity of the fourth suspect is unknown.

The four suspects, aged between 40 and 60, were arrested on Thursday evening when they were summoned to the Kedah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office to have their statements recorded.

Sources said that based on investigations at this point of time, the said money was placed in the accounts of the football club.

“The money is believed to be the ‘reward’ for helping a company owner obtain a tender for a project and also to manage, operate and maintain five reservoirs in a state,” said a source.

The four suspects were remanded for three days beginning yesterday after Magistrate Siti Norhidayah Mohd Noor allowed the remand application made by MACC prosecutors.

MACC senior director of investigation Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the arrests and that the agency was investigating the case.

Meanwhile in Kuantan, a housewife lost RM229,627 of her savings after being duped into joining a non-existent investment scheme.

She had reportedly discovered the scheme through the WeChat application.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 51-year-old victim claimed that the money was her Employee Provident Fund (EPF) contributions and her husband’s death insurance benefits.

“The victim said she was attracted into joining the investment scheme around April last year as it offered double the profits.

“She registered using the link provided by a suspect.

“In addition, the victim also shared her automated teller machine (ATM) withdrawal information with the suspect to transfer money,” he said in a statement.

BK reported that the victim only realised she had been cheated when she did not get the returns promised.

She then lodged a report at the police station in Kuala Lipis near here on Thursday.
