‘MCA will continue to stand up for M’sians’

KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA’s priority is to stand up for the people and solve their problems, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said the party will also play a check and balance role, continuing to speak up for the Chinese community.

“We hope leaders and members from Chinese guilds and associations will continue to support MCA.

“From being the ruling party, to the opposition party, to now supporting the unity government, we are adapting.

“We thank Chinese community leaders for their support of MCA all these years,” he said during the Chinese New Year dinner with party veterans and leaders of Chinese guilds and associations here yesterday.

Dr Wee said as is tradition, MCA will hold its Chinese New Year open house at Dewan San Choon, Wisma MCA.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi are expected to attend the celebration on Feb 10.Dr Wee also said the event with party veterans and leaders of Chinese guilds and associations is significant after a five-year hiatus.

“MCA was established in 1949 with the encouragement of the business community. Therefore, MCA cannot be separated from the Chinese society.

“That is why, during Chinese New Year, it is our tradition to celebrate on a large scale.

“MCA and the leaders of Chinese guilds and associations are our greatest blessings,” he said.

Also present at the event were Dr Wee’s wife Datin Seri Jessica Lim, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon, vice-presidents Datuk Lim Ban Hong, Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng and Datuk Lawrence Low Ah Keong as well as Wanita MCA chairman Wong You Fong and MCA Youth chief Ling Tian Soon.

Former MCA president Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai, United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) president Tan Tai Kim, Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) president Tan Sri Low Kian Chuan, former Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong) president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah, Educationist group United Chinese School Teachers’ Association (Jiao Zong) president Cheah Lek Aee and his wife were also in attendance.

Others who attended the dinner included editors from the media. Among them were Star Media Group advisor and BK chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, as well as Star Media Group chief content officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng.
