Lampoopalooza 2024: Art and light festival at Gaya street on Feb 2

KOTA KINABALU: City dwellers can enjoy a fusion of art, light and community empowerment festival at the popular Gaya Street downtown come Friday (Feb 2), where Lampoopalooza 2024 will be held.

Organised by Sabah Tourism Board (STB), the night event will feature a laser light show projected on the iconic STB building, a display of a lit-up water tank installation powered by solar, as well as glow art by local artists.

“Taking our commitment to community empowerment a step further by incorporating sustainable energy solutions, the festival will feature solar panels strategically placed to power the lit-up water tanks.

“These solar panels will be donated to Kampung Timpayasa located at Ulu Papar after the event, ensuring a lasting impact by providing renewable energy to light up the village.

“At the moment, the only source of electricity in Kampung Timpayasa is through the villagers’ own small solar photovoltaic (PV) system.

“The water tanks used will also be donated to a few villages which will be identified later,” said STB in a statement, adding that the initiative was a collaboration with upcycling innovator Japson Wong and non-governmental organisation (NGO), Tonibung.

Lampooopalooza is also collaborating with Sabah Art Gallery (SAG) and two local artists Azlan Dulikab and Rosmaini Sunarjo, where there will be a showcase of glow-in-the-dark paintings that come to life as the sun sets.

These Glow Art will be handed to SAG to be donated to a few rural schools of their choice after the festival, said STB.

“Lampoopalooza is also working with the Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH) to showcase the culinary offerings of hotels in the city through pop-up stalls.

“So, it will be a feast for the senses as visitors explore the luminous installation and vibrant artworks while enjoying the food and music,” said the Board, adding that more information of the event which will be held from 6.30pm to 11pm can be reached at the Lampoopalooza event page on Facebook.
