PETALING JAYA: It’s not every day that an international superstar pops in for a visit to Malaysia.
For some, they prefer to stay under the radar. Arrive, do what they need to, and depart, while some make it an extravaganza event to announce their arrival.
But for international football icon David Beckham, his character shone through all the glitz and glamour.
It’s no secret that Beckham is in Kuala Lumpur to attend the “World of Predator Exhibition” for sportswear brand Adidas at The Exchange TRX, but the former England captain also made time to get familiar with the local grassroots scene on Thursday (Feb 2).
Before heading to the big event at the new mall, 48-year-old Beckham made a stop at a girl’s football clinic in the morning, spending time with up-and-coming athletes aiming to reach great heights in a male-dominated sport.
Despite the morning searing heat, the Manchester United legend took time to engage in a quick training session, passed balls to the hopeful youth, certainly making their day, and leaving a lasting impression in their hearts.
When all the girls lined up to have their jerseys autographed by the Inter Miami CF co-owner, he did not hesitate, signing each one with patience and care, knowing how much it would mean to each of the players.
All other attendees at the event, although thankful to be in the presence of a world renowned footballer, were initially disappointed they would not have a chance to get a quick snap with Beckham. But the six-time Premier League winner, did not disappoint as he made his way to the sidelines to please his adoring fans.
Gesturing to the crowd that he would start at one end and make his way through, Beckham stayed true to his word, signing each jersey held up to him and taking selfies with the starstruck kids in attendance.
Even though an autograph or picture just takes up a second of his time, those on the receiving end now would have a cherished moment that will stay with them for a long time.
