Activist gives RM20,000 to mental health group

SOCIAL activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has extended his support to Befrienders KL with proceeds from sales of his biography, underscoring his commitment to mental health advocacy.

Lee, who is also a patron of the non-profit and voluntary service organisation, presented RM20,000 to its chairman Justin Victor.

The contribution was sourced from proceeds of his biography, Call Lee Lam Thye: Recalling a Lifetime of Service.

Reflecting on his journey with Befrienders KL, Lee said: “On World Mental Health Day, Oct 10, 2019, I became a patron of Befrienders KL.Lee, speaking during a presentation, is also patron of Befrienders KL.

“I have always advocated for the importance of mental well-being and the prevention of suicide.

“I spoke for many years for the decriminalisation of suicide and I am happy to say that this has finally become a reality.

“These topics hold a special place in my heart and my active involvement in an organisation that focuses on these issues as a patron was a natural progression.”

Lee pledged to donate the net proceeds from the sale of his book to charity.

“With the publication of my book in 2022, I aimed to inspire kindness and goodness, channelling all proceeds to charitable causes, recognising the funding challenges many organisations, including Befrienders KL, face,” he said during a presentation ceremony at its centre in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

He added that Befrienders KL’s eclectic team of more than 100 volunteers was drawn from all walks of life.

“They dedicate their time and efforts selflessly to those who are struggling with mental health issues, lending an ear any time of the day or night.

“On top of providing round-the-clock emotional support, Befrienders KL is also engaged in other outreach programmes to educate the public and create awareness on issues related to mental health and suicide prevention.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Befrienders KL for their work and I am honoured to play a part in advancing their mission, knowing they will put this money to good use,” he said.

Meanwhile, Victor expressed gratitude for the contribution and said: “Befrienders KL is appreciative of Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, not only for this kind donation that means a lot to us as a non-profit organisation, but also for his continuous support and guidance throughout the years.”

He said Lee’s long-standing commitment to issues related to crime, safety and mental health, including his involvement in the National Mental Health Promotion Advisory Council, underscored his dedication.

Lee encouraged further support for Befrienders KL, urging donations and volunteering efforts.

“Life is indeed precious. So, please reach out if you are struggling.”

Befrienders KL is a non-profit, voluntary service organisation that provides 24-hour free confidential emotional support to those who are suicidal, depressed or in despair.

Its vision is a world where fewer people feel the need to end their own lives.
