RESIDENTS of SS2, Petaling Jaya, are not pleased with the drain upgrading project in their area and are complaining of shoddy workmanship.
A resident who wished to be known as A. Chern said the work done near his house seemed somewhat complete but the drain tiles were uneven.
“The drain also needs to be cleared as there is sediment at the bottom,” said Chern.
“I recently had dengue and I am not sure where I contracted it from, but I’ve noticed stagnant water in the drain at the uneven connecting points.
“Some parts of the drain are dry. Only when there is a downpour, the water flows.”
Despite drains being upgraded, the drain shoulder had not been properly resurfaced and old drain tiles had been left uncollected for weeks, he added.
When StarMetro visited the site, several construction workers were seen clearing off drain tiles.
There are signboards indicating that drain upgrading works are taking place at Jalan SS2/16, Jalan SS2/18, Jalan SS2/20, Jalan SS2/22 and Jalan SS2/24.
It is stated that the work had started last November and would be completed in April.
Nearby the playground beside Jalan SS2/18, portions of the old pavement have been damaged and heavy vehicle tyre marks are noticeable.
Some of the old drain covers are also damaged.
Another resident, who wished not to be named, said she had to carry some of the drain tiles that had been discarded by the corner of her house.
“I could not park my car because of the debris left behind.
“I hope that as the drain upgrading work continues, all debris will be cleared as they pose a danger, especially to senior citizens walking around the neighbourhood,” she said.
She said more supervision of these projects was needed to ensure work was properly done.
Councillor Loh Y Lun said he would check on the complaints.
“The damage to the pavement, at the playground, was caused by a heavy vehicle that was there to facilitate the pruning of trees.
“We are aware of the damage and the pavement will be repaired.”
Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) engineering director Ismail Shafie said regardless of whether the project was completed, large bins must be placed at the site for the disposal of discarded drain slabs.
“No debris should be left behind. The area must be cleared. Please lodge a complaint with the council if you see any debris,” added Ismail.
