A HIGH school student in China was awarded a 5,000 yuan (RM3,276) scholarship after he carried his disabled classmate to safety during an earthquake on April 3, Sin Chew Daily reported.
On that day, Xiamen, a port city in the southeast coast of China beside the Taiwan strait, was hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Hualien on the east coast of Taiwan.
When students were ordered to evacuate their classrooms, high school freshman Zhang Zhixun immediately grabbed his disabled classmate, known as Lele, and carried him.
Lele suffers from muscular dystrophy and requires a wheelchair to move around.
Once it was deemed safe to return to their classrooms, a teacher played CCTV footage of Zhang’s action, which led to applause and praises from his classmates.
A surprised Zhang said he was just doing what he was supposed to do.
“I did not want Lele to be left behind. That is why I carried him and we escaped together,” he said.
The Alibaba Foundation has awarded Zhang the scholarship for his bravery.
> Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung is apparently upset that her teenage son is said to be dating a woman 29 years older, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Her eldest son Lucas Tse, 17, was recently photographed shopping for groceries with a 46-year-old personal trainer.
There was even talk that the pair were living together.
This was said to have infuriated Cheung so much that she ended up being hospitalised.
Lucas’ father, actor Nicholas Tse, has been having an on-off-on relationship with a singer who is 11 years his senior.
Cheung and Nicholas divorced in 2006. They have two sons.
Cheung, 43, had a third son in 2018 with another man whose identity she has not revealed.
