Dim sum with a difference

DIM SUM offers a range of flavours, textures and aromas to suit most palates.

Chynna, a modern Chinese restaurant in Hilton Kuala Lumpur, prides itself on serving premium dim sum with an innovative twist.

Among the standout offerings in the steamed variety are Lobster and Shrimp Dumpling with Asparagus, Mackerel Fish Dumpling with Flying Fish Roe as well as Snow Crab and Shrimp Dumpling with Carrots.

The asparagus and carrots, which are the unique topper ingredients, give the dishes extra crunch.

Wong’s pastry dim sum is pleasing not only to the palate but also the eye.

The Black Swan Thousand-Layer Pastry looks too pretty to eat.

Stuffed with tender roasted duck, foie gras and earthy mushrooms, it is truly a treat.

The Black Pepper Wagyu Beef Pastry has a Christmas vibe due to its candy cane-like decoration on top of a muffin-shaped pastry.

Inside are flavourful chunks of beef that meld perfectly with the soft dough and flaky shell that encloses it.

Another highlight is the Pan-Fried Salmon Trout Dumpling with Black Truffle, Assorted Mushrooms and Salmon Roe.

Not your typical dim sum, it leans more to Western cuisine with the succulent fish on a bed of mushrooms and black truffle, topped with a sweet crisp biscuit and salty salmon roe.

To end the meal, I opted for the unconventional dessert of Mango Ball with Jasmine Tea and White Chocolate.

The jasmine tea mousse is enclosed in a white chocolate egg-shaped shell with a mango puree centre, served with jasmine ice-cream.

Besides dim sum, sticky rice dumplings are available until June 10 in conjunction with Dragon Boat Festival.

Highlights in this menu include Vegetarian Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Assorted Mushroom and Black Truffle.

The dumplings have an umami taste, thanks to ingredients like shimeji, morel and monkey head mushrooms, truffle paste and black truffle.

There is also the Shrimp Sambal Abalone Glutinous Rice Dumpling for those who like a little bit of spiciness, as the dumpling is cooked with abalone and shrimp sambal sauce filling.

The Black Swan Thousand-Layer Pastry is a work of art.

The Hainan Chicken Glutinous Rice Dumpling is true to its name.

Served with freshly blended chilli and scallion-ginger dipping sauce, it tastes like chicken rice.

For those who like sweet dumplings, there is Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Longan Lotus and Pistachio Nuts. Dried longan sugar is served on the side.

Rice dumplings are priced from RM48nett for two pieces.

Dim sum is priced between RM38nett and RM42nett per set.
