‘Power outages no more’ | The Star

POWER outages along Jalan CY Choy will soon be a thing of the past as Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) plans to instal a new feeder pillar in Lebuh McNair, providing a permanent solution to the issue.

Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng said he met with a team of senior TNB officers, including its Penang general manager Datuk Ismail Lathifi Teh, on May 14 and they subsequently came to this agreement.

“I was told that the increasing demand for electricity, combined with the hot weather since the beginning of the year, has led to the current power supply being unable to support high usage, often resulting in fuse burnouts and power outages.

“Over the past four and a half months, TNB’s system has recorded multiple power outages, each requiring a new fuse replacement, and this will take about 30 minutes each.

“However, due to their team sometimes being occupied with power supply issues in other areas, they cannot always reach Jalan CY Choy immediately, resulting in power outages lasting one to two hours,” he said.

Wong added that the feeder pillar would be installed next month, and the area was not expected to face power supply interruptions.

“I was also told that TNB plans to upgrade the power supply system in the George Town urban area via monopoles being built adjacent to the Penang Bridge over the next five years, with an estimated cost of RM30mil.”

Meanwhile, Wong highlighted that the Pengkalan Kota National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) was now operational at Macallum Street Community Hall.

Wong said his constituency was among the first batch of Nadi sites across Malaysia that would be ready to serve the public from 9am to 6pm daily, starting today.

“The public can visit the centre to use computers or access the Internet for free, while services such as printing or photocopying are available for a nominal fee.

“Additionally, Nadi provides a space that can be used for public courses and meetings for up to 30 people, available for rent at RM10 per hour,” he added.

Nadi was established by the Federal Government to enhance community understanding of government projects and initiatives.
