TASEK GELUGOR: Pakatan Harapan’s Telok Ayer Tawar candidate Abdul Mohsein Mohd Shariff has pledged to be the ‘bridge’ between the people and the relevant authorities to address various local issues, such as floods and drainage problems in the area.
He said the constituency, which has a mixed demographic of urban and rural areas, must be approached in a proper manner.
“There have been complaints from voters that some parts in Teluk Ayer Tawar were hit by floods due to the heavy rain at night.
“Some places were badly hit, and others complained about the poor drainage system, which requires the involvement of the local authorities.
“At the moment I am dealing directly with them. I believe that with my presence, I can be the facilitator or intermediary for the people of Teluk Ayer Tawar. This will ensure that all issues faced by the residents can be solved immediately,” he said when met here yesterday.
Abdul Mohsein will be in a straight fight with Perikatan Nasional candidate Azmi Alang for the Telok Ayer Tawar state seat, which is a Malay majority area. It has 24,784 voters.
Abdul Mohsein said floods are a long-standing issue in the area.
“We need to upgrade the existing drainage system or else there will be more floods.
“The matter has been highlighted for quite some time, but it requires technical cooperation from various government agencies such as the Drainage and Irrigation Department,” he added.
Abdul Mohsein also promised to introduce more basic infrastructure, should he win the state seat.
“There is only one ATM machine here. If I win, I will bring more development and changes to the surrounding areas,” he added.
Asked about his engagement with non-Malay voters, he said that based on his meet-the-people session, the response has been positive.
“I also met the Chinese community and discussed with them the issues that they faced.
“Some wanted the drainage system to be improved. I also met Indian residents, as well as the Tasek Gelugor MIC leadership.
“They have given their full commitment to support and campaign for me,” he added.
Asked on other issues faced by the people here, he said the election logo used by Pakatan Harapan is a challenge during the election campaign.
“Previously, people here were on Barisan Nasional’s side and they are familiar with the Barisan ‘dacing’ logo.
“But since Barisan and Pakatan are cooperating together, we have decided to use Pakatan logo.”
