SIXTY new burial plots will be available at the Ampang/Ulu Kelang Hindu Cemetery in Ampang Jaya, Selangor, following a remapping exercise last year.
The association managing the burial site said the exercise revealed that the 60-year-old cemetery at Jalan Kolam Air Lama, off Jalan Kerja Ayer Lama, was meant to be bigger than its current layout.
Hindu Cemetery Crematorium Ampang Association honorary chairman Dr Indrakaran T. Karthigesu said the confusion came about as the Hindu cemetery shared a border with the Ampang/Ulu Klang Chinese cemetery located behind it.
“There was no proper border created when the two cemeteries were laid out many years ago.
“But the land office has since confirmed that part of the Chinese cemetery had encroached onto the Hindu cemetery land.
“The issue has since been resolved. We are in the process of clearing the area for new burial plots.”
There were currently 800 burial plots, he said, adding that the new burial plots would be available by the end of the year.
The mapping exercise was carried out as part of a proposal by Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) to build a crematorium on the grounds of the Ampang/Ulu Klang Hindu and Chinese cemeteries.
Association vice-chairman Siva Senan Balakrishnan said that a drainage upgrading project was also being planned at the site.
“Because of the site’s slope, rainwater is flooding parts of the burial ground.
“This is damaging the graves and causing some areas to sink,” he said.
“We have hired an engineering consultant to come up with plans to build a drainage system to resolve this problem,” he added, saying he hoped work would start next month.
The association representative said old trees within the compound had been either cut or trimmed for safety reasons.
Indrakaran said the next of kin were expected to visit the cemetery in conjunction with the upcoming Deepavali.
Grass cutting and efforts to spruce up the cemetery were also being carried out and will be completed before the festival.
