Appointment of Opposition Leader based on consensus, says FT Bersatu info chief

PETALING JAYA: The decision to appoint Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin as the Opposition Leader in the Dewan Rakyat is based on the consensus of the Perikatan Nasional leadership, says Federal Territories Bersatu information chief Mahathir Mohd Rais.

He said in a press statement on Sunday (Nov 12) that the decision reflects a leadership approach that involves consultation and consensus in decision-making.

Mahathir was commenting in response to a statement issued on Saturday (Nov 11) by former Johor Bahru MP Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad.

The following is his statement in full:

In evaluating Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad’s criticism of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, we need to consider it from a broader perspective. This includes understanding global politics and principles of leadership in Islam. Good leadership, as demonstrated by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, requires the ability to adapt to circumstances, have an inclusive vision, and manage in a fair manner.

A good leader is not only effective in managing their duties and responsibilities but also capable of nurturing and producing better leaders. This reflects the concept of sustainable leadership, where a leader is not only focused on current achievements but also ensures that future generations of leaders are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and aspirations to continue the struggle.

This shows that Tan Sri Muhyiddin, as a statesman, values the importance of cooperation and shared agreement in the leadership process, which may initially appear detrimental. However, for a skilled chess player, every move has a deeper purpose and objective.

If examined, the Perikatan Nasional is an effort to create balance and harmony in decision-making. Collectively made decisions often represent various perspectives and can lead to more inclusive and holistic solutions to the challenges at hand.

From an Islamic perspective, this approach reflects the principle of “shura,” which is consultation and mutual discussion in decision-making. This shows that Tan Sri Muhyiddin and the leadership of PN value the principles of democracy and collective decision-making in managing political affairs, in line with Islamic values.

People who perceive sincerity in Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s leadership may feel a significant difference in the way politics and governance are managed compared to UMNO leadership.

Sincerity is crucial in building trust and support from the people. Leaders perceived as sincere and dedicated to the well-being of the people and the nation typically receive stronger support from the public.

Leadership oriented towards unity and sincerity, as demonstrated by Tan Sri Muhyiddin, paves the way for a more stable and inclusive politics in Malaysia. It also emphasizes the importance of leadership that can inspire trust and shoulder responsibility, which is vital for the progress and political and social harmony of the country.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s approach, which prioritizes consensus and collective discussion, not only strengthens solidarity within PN but also sets an example of mature and responsible leadership, considering various perspectives and interests before making important decisions. This is a characteristic of effective leadership, especially in the dynamic political context of Malaysia.
