Armizan: Menu Rahmah operators to get discount cards for staple foods

KUALA LUMPUR: Menu Rahmah operators are now eligible for discounts up to 40% on various cooking items including chicken, said Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.

The acting Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said restaurant operators who carry Menu Rahmah at their premises can start applying for the Menu Rahmah special discount card from Nov 2.

He said the card application is also opened to other eatery operators who are willing to carry Menu Rahmah which provides less than RM5 per meal to Malaysians who are affected by the rising cost of living.

According to Armizan, operators can enjoy discounts at six selected supermarkets namely Aeon Big, Econsave, Giant, Lotus’s, Mydin and NSK.

“Among the items offered at a discounted rate to Menu Rahmah operators that have been approved for participation in this programme are raw items such as chicken, onions and other basic food items to help operators reduce the cost of preparing the Menu Rahmah.

“These supermarkets will offer a discount rate of up to 40% on 5,000 stock keeping units (SKU), subject to the terms and conditions set by the supermarket,” he said during a press conference at Wisma Rampai, here on Thursday (Nov 2).

Armizan said enforcement officers are deployed regularly to monitor premises that offer the Menu Rahmah to ensure they are adhering to the price limit.

Currently, there are 2,849 registered eateries that are offering Menu Rahmah at their premises since the programme was carried out on Jan 31, he said.

He said given that the discount card programme is still at an early stage, the ministry will do regular checks to determine whether the initiative is effective.

“Currently we are conducting studies on the overall effectiveness of each programme under the ministry, including initiatives under the Payung Rahmah.

“We can see there are some premises that have stopped offering Menu Rahmah due to lack of customers who are interested in buying the meals.

“This is something that we are looking into, to find out the locations that would best benefit those who are affected by the rising cost of living.”

Restaurant operators may apply for the Menu Rahmah special discount card at the ministry’s website at menurahmah.kpdn.gov.my.
