Badminton: Aaron-Soh, Yew Sin-Ee Yi face current and former world champs in home quarters

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a day to remember for professional doubles shuttlers Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi pulled off an incredible show to upstage Denmark’s No. 1 pair Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 21-10, 11-21, 24-22 for the first time in their fifth attempt to storm into the Malaysian Open quarter-finals at the Axiata Arena on Thursday (Jan 11).

They will face former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi of Japan in the semis on Friday.

National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are also through to the quarters after disposing off fellow Malaysians Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani 21-15, 21-16.

Aaron-Wooi Yik will also have an equally tough task to keep Malaysia’s flag flying high as they face reigning world champions Kang Min-hyuk-Seo Seung-jae of South Korea.

However, it was the end of the road for the remaining Malaysians in the tournament.

It was a total wipeout in the mixed doubles as Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie crashed out in the second round.

The sole women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei also fell short after losing 15-21, 22-24 to Indonesia’s Gregoria Tunjung.
