Badminton: Classy China beat Indonesia 3-1 to lift Thomas Cup

CHENGDU: China proved they are invincible at home as they beat Indonesia 3-1 to lift the Thomas Cup.

It was a sweet revenge after losing to Indonesia 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the last Thomas Cup Finals in Bangkok, Thailand two years ago.

They also ended their six-year wait as they last captured the title at the 2018 edition in Bangkok, Thailand. Indonesia won in the 2020 edition while India were the champions at the last edition in Bangkok, Thailand.

On Sunday, Shi Yuqi, who did not feature at the last Finals, started the ball rolling when he gave a solid show to beat Anthony Ginting 21-17, 21-6 in the final of the Thomas Cup Finals at the Hi-Tech Sports Centre in Chengdu, China.

Anthony was blown away in the second game after giving a commendable fight in the first.

In the second doubles, Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang rose to the occasion to beat Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto 21-18, 17-21, 21-17 in a thrilling match that gave the home team a superb 2-0 lead.

The hope was on Li Shifeng to keep a clean sheet for China but he went down fighting to Jonatan Christie 16-21, 21-15, 17-21.

The point gave Indonesia some hope to stage a fightback but He Jiting-Ren Xiangyu foiled it.

In just 38 minutes they buried Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana with a sensational 21-11, 21-15 win to give China their 11th Thomas Cup victory.

The home fans erupted in joy as it had been a perfect week for the hosts. Earlier, the Uber Cup team had won their 15th Uber Cup title after beating Indonesia 3-0.
