A THOUSAND new trees will soon be planted across Selangor and Perak, now that one of the country’s biggest banks is working with Yayasan Hijau Malaysia to help preserve nature.
For a start, 100 staff volunteers from Public Bank Group went to Bukit Cherakah, Selangor, to plant 100 trees as part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility programme.
The “Greening Malaysia through the National 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign 2021-2025” aims to promote green technology in the country.
At the bank’s inaugural tree planting ceremony, Public Bank managing director Tan Sri Tay Ah Lek likened the event to sowing seeds of positive change and nurturing a sustainable world.
“We recognise the critical role that businesses play in addressing environmental and social challenges.
“This programme aligns seamlessly with our group’s sustainability agenda.”
Yayasan Hijau Malaysia chief executive officer Nurul Muiz Muradin thanked the bank for fulfilling their social responsibilities.
“Our aim is to conserve Malaysia’s biodiversity and address climate change.
“Trees play a vital role in preserving the environment for the benefit of future generations,” he said.
Selangor Forestry Department director Azhar Ahmad praised Public Bank for making the nation’s forest heritage a priority.
“The department has taken several initiatives to preserve the forests of Selangor.
“Among them are replanting programmes in impoverished and degraded forest areas, and awareness campaigns on the importance of forests.”
At the event, Tay along with Public Islamic Bank Bhd chief executive officer Syamsul Azuan Ahmad Fauzi, Public Investment Bank Bhd chief executive officer Lee Yo-Hunn and Public Mutual Bhd chief investment officer Chung Yee Wah presented Nurul Muiz with the group’s contribution of RM109,450 towards the tree planting programme.
The planting of the remaining 900 trees will be done by the trust, the state forestry department and bank staff in mangrove forests across both states.
