BUSINESSMAN Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh contributed RM15,000 to two squash-related causes, a donation inspired by his recreational enjoyment of the sport.
The corporate personality donated RM10,000 to the Nicol David Organisation (NDO), a foundation that aims to empower girls and boys through sports and education, and RM5,000 to Kenneth Low, a former national squash player facing various health issues including a mild stroke.
“I hope that these donations will help – in creating awareness and unearthing potential talents from young (through David’s foundation) and to help Low with his treatment,” said Mohamad Salim.
“I am trying to organise a bigger event next year with more corporate personalities playing to raise more funds for NDO and for the development of squash (in Malaysia).”
David said NDO provides an after-school programme in squash training and English proficiency, particularly for children from low-income groups.
“The programme aims to inculcate good values in children through sports,” said the former international squash champion.
“Having had one cohort of eight-year-olds go through the programme, I have seen how sport has boosted the children’s confidence and how it makes a difference in their posture, stance, walk and conversation.”
National Athletes Welfare Foundation (Yakeb) chairman Datuk Noorul Ariffin Abdul Majeed said Low is now housed in a welfare home after collapsing two months ago.
“His speech and balance are getting better after undergoing daily rehabilitation at the home and monthly at a centre in Cheras.
“The doctors at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital will be sending his blood test to South Korea soon to get a correct diagnosis and complete report on Low’s condition,” said Noorul Ariffin, adding that the foundation would continue caring for Low.
Mohamad Salim presented the cheque to David and Noorul Ariffin, who collected it on Low’s behalf.
Noorul Ariffin and David later played a friendly squash game at a club in Kuala Lumpur.
