Cops’ pay being reviewed, Dewan Rakyat told

KUALA LUMPUR: Emoluments for police officers are being reviewed under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), says Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.

“The government is carrying out the SSPA in line with reforming the civil service and the Malaysia Madani development aspiration.

“This comprehensive study will involve improvements in the structure of salaries, allowances and benefits for all civil servants including the police and it is expected to be implemented in 2025,” he said during Oral Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (March 6).

Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) had asked if the government was ready to consider better salaries for the police.

Shamsul said salaries and allowances of the police were low and inadequate, especially for those living in cities.

“For now, allowances are given based on their residential area, and are between RM200 and RM350.

“Putrajaya has realised that this rate is low, taking into account the rising cost of living, especially in big cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru. Therefore, the ministry has asked the Public Service Department to look into this,” said Shamsul.

Meanwhile, Shamsul said the base salary for a police officer was not static and was constantly reviewed.

“Emoluments, including base salary, fixed remuneration and other allowances were given based on job placement, expertise and risk. The total exceeds the RM1,500 minimum wage,” he added.

For example, he said, a YA1 Constable receives RM1,441 in base salary, along with RM300 fixed housing allowance, RM115 fixed public service allowance, RM350 subsistence allowance and RM200 service incentive payment for a gross salary of RM2,406.

“The annual increment for YA1 grade is RM105. The total gross salary does not include allowances based on assignment and placement,” he added.
