Family of woman who died after breast enlargement op urged to lodge report

JOHOR BARU: The family of the woman who died after a breast enhancement procedure has been urged to lodge a report with the Johor Health Department.

State health and unity committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said this would enable health authorities to conduct an in-depth probe and seek justice for Tan Wei Shan’s death.

“I have suggested for the family to lodge a report with the Health Department as soon as possible so that the matter can be probed under the Private Healthcare Facilities And Services Act on whether the procedure, said to have been conducted at a private residence, was done in accordance with health standard operating procedures and whether the beautician possessed the relevant accreditation to do so,” he said in a Facebook post after visiting the deceased’s family on Tuesday (Aug 8).

Ling said he also offered his condolences to Tan’s family, including her two young children aged nine and 12.

He said that the late housewife’s family described her as a cheerful and filial person and they were unable to accept her sudden death.

“I would like to appeal to the public to only undergo medical aesthetics treatment at licensed clinics with Health Ministry certification.

“They must also make sure that the person who performs the procedure possesses valid professional certification and licence,” he added.

Tan died at around 7pm on Aug 2 after undergoing a breast enhancement procedure at a double-storey house in Taman Mutiara Rini, Skudai here on July 29 evening.

Her husband, a 35-year-old businessman who only wanted to be known as Wong, said his wife began feeling dizzy and unwell after returning home.

“She complained of pain and swelling on her chest. The following afternoon (July 30), my wife sought help at a clinic and was subsequently rushed to a private hospital for medical treatment at around 7pm.”

Initially, Tan wanted to get a facelift and got to know the beautician through a friend.

The beautician later convinced her to go for a breast enhancement procedure.

“Throughout their four months of conversation, the beautician never told my wife that she was unlicensed,” added Wong.
