Festive joy for poor families in Kepong

A HINDU temple in Kepong, Selangor, celebrated its inaugural Deepavali open house with giveaway of hampers to 20 families from the B40 group in the area.

Some 500 people from the surrounding community attended the celebration at Thirumurugan Alayam in Desa Jaya.

Also present were 50 under-privileged children from two homes, namely Karunai Illam and Anbu Illam.

Temple chairman N.Rajalingam said they usually organised celebrations on a small scale but decided to go big this time.

He said the temple was also active in interfaith activities in the area and encouraged everyone to visit the places of worship of all religions.

“We thank all the leaders of other places of worship that have made it here today.

A cultural dance treat for the guests.

“We advocate harmonious living, unity and respect among people of all religions,” he said.

Rajalingam said his vision for the temple was not only for it to serve as a place for prayers, but also as a place for the people to seek knowledge, skill and assistance.

“Presently, we have free religious singing classes, specifically thevaram and bhajan.

“We also offer bharatanatyam dance classes for underprivileged children.

“My next plan is to provide free tuition classes for them.”

The guests were treated to a vegetarian dinner and cultural performances.

Guest of honour Damansara MP Gobind Singh Deo, who had extended financial support to the temple management to conduct community activities, said the celebration was an example on how Malaysians should use diversity as a strength to be united in their pursuits.

“The government considers all people in the country importance regardless of religion and race.

“If there is a need, put forth your proposal and we will see how we can help,” said Gobind, who was appointed Digital Minister in the recent Cabinet reshuffle.

Also at the celebration were Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Pua Pei Ling and senator Suresh Singh.

All children at the event also received money packets from the temple management.
