Free learning to boost tech innovation

FREE computer science education will be provided, to inculcate digital skills and contribute to technological innovation in Penang.

The initiative called “42 Penang” offers peer-to-peer learning that does not involve teachers or classes.

It is an inclusive platform for students to acquire real-world skills through project-based learning, without fees.

It is part of 42 Malaysia (42MY), a peer-to-peer computer science school that aims to develop 10,000 skilled tech talent within the next 10 years.

The Penang edition of 42MY was launched as part of a landmark collaboration between state agency Digital Penang, Sunway Education Group and Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

Representatives signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Digital Penang and Sunway Education Group that was witnessed by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and state infrastructure, transport and digital development committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.

Chow said it was a momentous occasion and a significant milestone in Penang’s journey towards becoming a global technology and innovation hub.

“This transformative trajectory is deeply embedded in the framework of Penang2030 and is clearly outlined in our Digital Transformation Master Plan.

“These visionary roadmaps have served as our guiding compass, directing our efforts to transform Penang into a highly liveable, equitable and sustainable city.

“We recognise the imperative of championing technology-driven education to cultivate a workforce that meets the demands of the industry.

“It is within this context that we proudly inaugurate the latest addition to our tech ecosystem – 42 Penang,” said Chow.

“This initiative ensures that every individual in the state, regardless of background or prior experience, can acquire essential IT skills.

“Graduates of 42 Penang will be highly sought after by employers in Penang and beyond.

“We are currently facing a shortage of skilled workers.

“The graduates of 42 Penang will be well-prepared to seize these opportunities and forge successful careers,” he said during the event at Wisma UAB in George Town.

Chow said the partnership was a significant milestone in continuous efforts to position Penang as a leading digital hub in Malaysia and South-East Asia.

He also said that the state government would be dedicating RM3.25mil over the next three years to ensure its success.

“This investment underscores our firm belief in the transformative power of education and technology, signalling our unwavering dedication to building a brighter future for all in Penang.

“We extend an invitation to industry leaders to join us in this initiative by becoming sponsors of 42 Penang,” said Chow.

“Your investment in education and the future of our workforce will propel us towards the Penang2030 vision of creating a brighter and technologically advanced future for Penang,” he added.
