Global sports spotlight on Putrajaya

DATARAN Putrajaya was again the setting of the world’s biggest duathlon as runners and cyclists from around the globe competed for the Powerman Malaysia title.

The 19th edition drew over 4,000 local and international duathletes to the annual event.

Participants took part in the run-bike-run format across various categories, including the classic distance (10km run, 60km bike, 10km run), short distance (5km, 30km, 5km), and three Powerkids categories for children aged six to 15.

Among the competitors were 20 children with physical disabilities and special needs who received enthusiastic support from the crowd.

Over 4,000 duathletes from more than 30 countries participated in the 19th edition of Powerman Malaysia.

Present at the flag-off were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Putrajaya Corporation president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud and Meeting & Support Incentives at Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) director Mohammad Isa Abdul Halim.

In the men’s Elite category, John Leerams Chicano from the Philippines won with a time of two hours, 41 minutes and 48 seconds, while Rendy Williams from the US finished first in the women’s category with a time of 03:09:34.

A number of Malaysian athletes also demonstrated impressive performances, led by Esther Joy Hong Li Chen who secured second place in the Elite women’s category with a time of 03:13:35.

In the Elite men’s category, Muhammad Rabani Hashim and Nazri Muhamad finished fifth and sixth, clocking 02:58:41 and 02:59:24 respectively.

“This year’s event saw over 30 nationalities represented,” said Powerman Malaysia race director and general manager Jeffrey Ross.

“Powerman Malaysia is one of the most popular and successful annual sporting fixtures in the country, and we were thrilled to showcase the beauty of Putrajaya to our participants.”

In addition to the main race, the event featured a bustling three-day industry expo and attracted over 50 exhibitors.

Brands such as Kahf, 100Plus, Shimano, Purpose Performance Wear, Therabody and Garmin showcased their products, making the venue a focal point for the running and biking communities.

A significant addition to this year’s event was the involvement of car marque Jaecoo as the event’s presenting partner, with the Jaecoo J7 SUV used as the race starter vehicle.
