Hidden camera incident: Hotels have strict rules to safeguard guests, says MAH

KOTA KINABALU: The recent incident where a hidden camera was found in the room of a couple from China who were here on their honeymoon did not occur in a registered hotel but at a short-term lodging facility.

Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Sabah/Labuan chapter chairman Hafizan Wong was commenting on reports that the camera was found in a hotel room.

“We are deeply concerned about the recent incident … We would like to clarify that it occurred in a short-stay property and not in a hotel as claimed by some reports.

“It is essential that consumers differentiate between registered and regulated hotels and other types of accommodation providers,” he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 25).

Hafizan said that hotels have to adhere to strict guidelines and regulations to ensure the well-being of guests.

“Short-term rental properties are not subject to the same regulations and standards as licensed hotels.

“Therefore, incidents like the one reported – while unfortunate – should not be attributed to the broader hotel industry as this can damage the trust and integrity of our accommodation sector as a whole,” he said.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the affected tourists whose experience was tarnished by this hidden camera incident.

“Any form of unauthorised surveillance is a violation of privacy and goes against the principles of responsible and ethical hospitality,” he said.

He urged all accommodation providers, regardless of their classification, to prioritise guest safety and privacy.

“We encourage travellers to choose lodging options wisely, be vigilant about their surroundings and report any concerns to the appropriate authorities.

“We remain committed to uphold the highest standards of guest safety and comfort. We will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to ensure that our hotels maintain the trust and confidence of travellers,” he added.

The Chinese couple lodged a police report after discovering the hidden camera hidden in an electric socket in their room.

Police are investigating and have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident.
