Icon Offshore to cooperate with authorities on vessel explosion 

PETALING JAYA: Icon Offshore Bhd is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities with regards to the explosion that occurred on its vessel, the Icon Amara, which resulted in two fatalities and one serious injury.

The incident occurred on Aug 2, 2024, at approximately 10:30pm at the Sapar Alpha platform near Bintulu, Sarawak.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Icon Offshore said it was “deeply saddened” by the incident.

“Icon emergency response team was immediately mobilised to provide the necessary support to the affected crew members and their next-of-kin. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and our deepest sympathies to the injured and their families. The company is committed to offering all possible assistance during this difficult time.” Icon Offshore said an investigation into the cause of the incident is currently underway, adding that it is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities.

“While the investigation is ongoing, we would like to assure all stakeholders that the vessel Icon Amara, along with its crew members, is fully insured.” The company said it anticipates the vessel to be restored to active duty following the completion of the investigation.

“Please be informed that there was a delay in releasing details about this incident, as we worked closely with our client and the relevant authorities to ensure all information was accurate and appropriately handled.

“We appreciate your understanding and patience as we collaborate to address this challenging situation.” Icon Offshore said its board wishes to clarify that this incident is not expected to have a material impact on the company’s overall operations or financial performance. “Icon remains committed to the safety and well-being of all personnel, and we will take all necessary steps to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.”
