Insurer takes on a better tomorrow with sustainability awareness event in Putrajaya

The event “Run For A Better Tomorrow” raised RM30,000 to benefit a non-profit organisation committed to eliminating cervical cancer in Malaysia.

Held at Dataran Putrajaya, the event was organised by Hong Leong Assurance (HLA) and saw over 1,800 people taking part in the 5km and 10km races.

It was launched by HLA group managing director and chief executive officer Loh Guat Lan, accompanied by Hong Leong MSIG Takaful chief executive officer Mohd Asri Omar and Hong Leong Assurance chief distribution officer Koh Hoe Shin.

As a domestic life insurer in the country, HLA has been offering financial planning and protection solutions to meet the various needs of Malaysians at different cycles of their life.

With a new strategic thrust, HLA aimed to present itself as a customer-first and tech-enabled insurer that strove to lead the way in sustainability and resiliency, according to its press statement.

“Run For A Better Tomorrow” was the company’s first run after the pandemic and served as a platform to unite communities towards creating public awareness on the importance of building a healthy and active lifestyle for a sustainable future, it said.

Also held in conjunction with its 50th anniversary, the event sought to raise awareness in nurturing a culture of sustainability and improving quality of life with environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) practices.

“Staying true to our brand promise of ‘Your Life is Our Passion’, our goal is to help everyone at all stages of their lives to have peace of mind with financial wellness,” said Loh.

“As guided by our core values of trust, legacy and dedication, we will continue to put people first and offer the best service and solutions to our esteemed customers as their trusted insurance partner for life,” she said.

As part of the insurer’s corporate social responsibility initiative, RM30,000 was raised by HLA and its takaful arm Hong Leong MSIG Takaful, with the support of Hong Leong Foundation.

Proceeds were channelled to Rose Foundation, which runs “Program Rose”, a pioneering HPV PCR cervical screening and self-testing programme.

This contribution will go towards assisting the foundation’s mission to screen more women in underprivileged communities.

In line with HLA’s commitment to sustainability, the run also built awareness on waste and ewaste.

To reduce the event’s carbon footprint, participants were encouraged to bring their own water bottles while cyclists and electric cars were mobilised as lead cars and marshals, and many participants were also seen carpooling to the venue.

There were also activity and agency recruitment booths by HLA and its takaful arm, as well as booths offering free health checks, HPV education and cervical screening, e-waste rewards and healthy meals.

Based on the overwhelming response to the event, the insurer said it was planning to make the run an annual one to encourage more Malaysians to stay active and cultivate daily ESG practices.
