JOHOR BARU: Some food delivery riders are still zipping through traffic without valid licences, road tax and insurance, according to the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
JPJ senior enforcement director Datuk Lokman Jamaan said such riders were not only posing danger to themselves but to other road users as well.
“Food delivery riders should abide by the law and ensure all their documents are valid before going out to look for their source of income.
“We know that many food delivery riders in the country depend on their motorcycles as their main mode of transportation.
“As such, they should ensure their own safety as well as the safety of other road users,” he said in a press conference during a joint roadblock operations in Jalan Besar Pasir Gudang here on Wednesday (Sept 27).
He added that in just two hours of operations, about four food delivery riders that were inspected did not possess valid road documents.
During the operations, Lokman also gave stern advice to the riders to respect the law and avoid risking their lives.
“We had no choice but to seize their motorcycle and in order to get it back, the owner will have to show proof of a valid licence, road tax and insurance.
“We are not discriminating against the riders. We inspect all vehicles including motorcycles during our operations to weed out those who commit road offences,” he said.
Lokman also reminded Malaysians not to rent or borrow their vehicles to foreigners as this could get them into trouble.
“During the operations, jointly done with the Immigration Department, a total of 22 foreign nationals were caught driving without valid documents,” he said, adding that the vehicles, mostly rented, were also seized.
He added that a total of 383,034 motorcycles were inspected nationwide from Sept 1 until Sept 26, where 124,345 notices were issued against them for various offences such as lack of valid documents, running red lights and illegal modification of vehicles.
