Man arrested for assaulting teachers who caught son smoking at school

KOTA KINABALU: A father, whose son was sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, was arrested for allegedly intimidating teachers who caught the boy purportedly smoking in the toilet at a school here on Monday (Jan 29).

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said on Tuesday (Jan 30) that they have arrested the father for probe under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation after teachers from the school lodged a police report.

It was learnt that the son, who was sitting for the Bahasa Malaysia oral examinations, was not arrested.

Videos over the alleged incident started making rounds in social media about 9am on Tuesday.

It was not clear what had actually transpired in the incident but it is understood that apparently teachers had caught the son allegedly smoking in the toilet before the exam.

It is learnt the boy telephoned the father who then came to the school and allegedly confronted the teachers.

The father was insistent that the school allowed the son to sit for the paper and this led to him becoming aggressive with several teachers, it was learnt.

When contacted, Sabah Education director Datuk Raisin Saidin said it was true the student was caught smoking in school, adding this was an act that was not allowed in the school compound.

He disclosed that the student had actually been expelled from the school last Dec 15.

The student, he added, was expelled after a second warning, although he did not specify what for.

“This means the student had been expelled but was allowed back in school.

“He is not barred from sitting for the SPM examinations..

“SPM candidates must follow the set rules of the school, including this student who is still a candidate,” Raisin said.

Towards this end, he said the examinations were not disrupted as a result of the incident.

“The school only had to address the student in question in this incident, the situation was under control.

“What is important is that the student concerned is able to sit for the SPM examinations,” he said.

He also urged the public not to blow the incident out of proportion so that parents and students, including the boy, could focus on the examinations.

In another viral clip, the student was seen to have confronted the teachers.
