JOHOR BARU: As part of its rejuvenation process, MCA will be embarking on a campaign to recruit more young members in every state, says its president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
He said leaders from its Wanita and Youth wings will be going from state to state to recruit more members into the party and as preparation for the next general election.
“MCA Youth chief (Ling Tian Soon), will be making his way to each state in Malaysia where he will meet with members from the youth wing.
“He will then set a target for the respective state youth wings on the number of new members they have to reach out to.”
As for Johor, Dr Wee said he had previously set the target of getting 4,000 new members as soon as possible.
“The Wanita wing will also be travelling from state to state to recruit more young, professional women,” he told reporters after chairing the Johor MCA committee meeting here yesterday.
Dr Wee, who is also Johor MCA chairman, said there had been an increase in interest among young people towards the party.
“Over the past few weeks, we have been receiving applications from those who have just reached 18 years old and are interested in joining the party.
“They include university students and top debaters. I am quite impressed with their performances, and I think this is a good sign,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ling said he would meet with the state youth wings next month.
“This will give me a chance to get closer to those in the youth wings, especially new members.
“On top of that, I will also be able to share with them the direction and future plans of the party,” he said, adding that such meetings were important to further strengthen the party.
Earlier during the press conference, Dr Wee announced the new line-up of the Johor MCA committee members, who were mostly new faces.
Among those in the state MCA line-up was Ling, who was appointed state deputy chairman.
Johor investment, trade, and consumer affairs committee chairman Lee Ting Han was made the Johor MCA secretary.
