A NEW era of palliative care will soon dawn in Penang.
The Penang Hospice Society (PHS) celebrated the groundbreaking for the construction of its eagerly awaited three-storey hospice centre in Lorong Batu Lanchang.
Its chairman Datuk Seri Dr T. Devaraj said the groundbreaking event was a momentous day for the society.
He said the project was an aspiration that had been nurtured for several years and was finally materialising with the support of numerous individuals and organisations.
“The construction cost of the centre, including furnishings, has been estimated at RM5.5mil, and with about RM3.2mil already secured, PHS is actively seeking additional funds.
“The upcoming centre will not only provide essential space for managing family plans but will also offer education and training opportunities in the field of palliative treatment,” he said in his speech.
Dr Devaraj added that among the notable contributors to this project was the Little Sisters of the Poor that had sold the building’s land to the society at an affordable price.
He said the society’s journey began with part-time nurses and had since evolved to encompass a dedicated team comprising nine palliative care nurses, one doctor, two part-time doctors and a nursing manager.
“Expenses have naturally grown, reaching approximately RM1.5mil this year.

“As a charitable organisation, we rely significantly on public support, with up to 80% of our funding derived from donations, while the remaining 20% is contributed by the Health Ministry and the Penang state government.
“Over the years, we have expanded our services to cater to an increasing number of patients with various illnesses, all with the shared goal of alleviating suffering and empowering families.
“We started the Palliative Home Care Programme in 1992 and have been at the forefront of providing in-home medical care for patients with advanced diseases, with a primary focus on cancer.”
Also present were Dr Wu Lien Teh Society chairman Datuk Seri Dr Anwar Fazal, PHS honorary secretary Tan Sri Emeritus Prof Gajaraj Dhanarajan together with other committee members including vice-chairman Datuk Dr Chan Kok Ewe and BYG Architecture Sdn Bhd architect Muhammad Azfar Afif Munir.
Among the key features of the building expected to be completed in about a year, is accessibility.
It has been designed with disabled-friendly features such as ramps, elevators, and well-lit corridors to contribute to a safe and welcoming atmosphere.
Muhammad Azfar said there will also be versatile spaces such as a 1,500sq ft auditorium capable of accommodating up to 250 attendees in a theatre-style arrangement.
“The upper open-platform floor, initially designed as a recreation space, can be transformed into an interior space, adding an additional 4,000sq ft to accommodate new amenities.
“The building’s design harnesses natural cross ventilation and daylight to create inviting, energy-efficient spaces.
“With 8,000sq ft of open space, along with a central courtyard, the building seamlessly integrates with nature to promote tranquility and healing, while its red clay bricks exude a timeless elegance.”
Those who wish to contribute can issue cheques to “Penang Hospice Society” or donate via the society’s bank account (CIMB 8003864144).
