No compromise, says IGP on action against cops involved in crime, abuse of power

GEORGE TOWN: While there are policemen involved in crime syndicates and abuse of power cases, it is a small number, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

“It cannot be denied that some police officers are involved in crime syndicates.

“I used to be the narcotics director and it is true that there were officers who were involved in syndicates and we had to take special preventive measures,” he told reporters during a press conference after officiating at the 76th Marine Police Day celebration at the marine police base in Batu Uban, Penang on Thursday (Oct 12).

He was commenting on Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain’s stern warning to his officers on being corrupt.

Razarudin said, however, it was a small number of officers involved.

“If we look at this year, as of August, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission only arrested 90 officers.

“Even internally, the number of investigation papers or disciplinary reports filed totalled only 881 cases out of the whole police force of over 30,000.

“This means the number of cases is only less than 1%,” he said.

He said they will resolve the issues of corrupt officers internally.

“It is not right for me to talk about this and not take action.

“We will not compromise on it in any way,” he said.

Razarudin said with the job of being a police officer comes power and there are cases of abuse of power.

He said this meant that any policeman from any department or unit can be involved in corruption.

“There is no single position in the police force that is not sensitive.

“We need to resolve this and repair our image in the eyes of the public.

“We will repair it and fix our image to gain the trust of the people, that is most important,” he said.

Razarudin said this is why he will not compromise if any policeman is involved in abuse of power or corruption, including other disciplinary issues.
