Pay hike proposal for cops justified, says Lam Thye

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed annual and salary increment for the police force are justified given the rising cost of living, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said the government should seriously consider the police’s proposal, especially adjusting the starting salary for police constable from RM1,441 to at least the national minimum wage rate of RM1,500.

“Such a proposal is justifiable in view of the increasing cost of living, especially for low-ranking police personnel.

“Once police personnel start work after undergoing training, it is difficult for them to survive with a base salary of RM1,441, especially those working in the cities,” he said when contacted on Sunday (Oct 8).

He was commenting on Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain’s proposal for the salary adjustment as well as 30% annual salary increase for the police force.

“Given the huge task of the police in ensuring the safety and security of the people, an annual salary increase is necessary. As for the 30% proposed increase, it is up to the government,” Lee added.

If both proposals are considered and approved, Lee also hopes that the efficiency of the police will be enhanced.

“The police have to work harder to justify the increase and they should be more productive. In this regard, I suggest that one of the things that can be improved upon is communication skills of the rank and file,” said Lee.

“The low-ranking personnel are the ones who deal a lot with the public,” he added.

Lee said improving the communication skills of personnel will also improve the police’s image.

“For example, when the public goes to the police station to lodge reports, they should be handled like clients in a friendly and professional manner. With improved communication skills, interaction with the public can be improved upon as well,” he said.
