Perikatan to sue govt, MACC following Muhyiddin’s acquittal

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional has initiated legal action to sue the government and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) following the High Court’s decision to free Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin of all his power abuse charges.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin urged the Attorney General to review all “selected prosecutions” against Bersatu and Perikatan leaders for the purpose of withdrawing them.

Hamzah, who is also Bersatu secretary-general, said the High Court not only ruled that the charges against former prime minister Muhyiddin as defective, baseless, vague and not in line with the Criminal Procedure Code but also a misuse of the court process.

“The truth is finally on the side of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Bersatu president and Perikatan chairman.

“The political revenge of the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional government which deliberately created slander, made up charges and abused power to prosecute Perikatan leaders was proven in court today.

“This tyranny needs to stop and I have also started legal action to sue the Malaysian Government and the MACC,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 15).

Hamzah added that the people’s referendum which has been shown in the result of the six state elections on Aug 12 must be translated by rejecting the Pakatan-Barisan government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Perikatan had won 146 seats out of 246 contested, including making a clean sweep of Terengganu’s 32 state assembly seats in the Aug 12 six state polls.

Earlier on Tuesday (Aug 12), the High Court in Kuala Lumpur discharged and acquitted Muhyiddin of four charges involving abuse of power to obtain a RM232.5mil gratification for Bersatu.

Justice Muhammad Jamil Hussin made the order to discharge and acquit the Bersatu president after the court was satisfied that all four charges were defective, baseless and vague.

Muhammad Jamil said the charges did not show any details on the offence, causing the accused to be unable to give proper instructions to his team of lawyers.
