PSSC mulls proceeding to discuss separation of powers between AG and Public Prosecutor

KUALA LUMPUR: A proceeding is being proposed to further discuss the separation of powers between the Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor, says Selayang MP William Leong Jee Keen.

The Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) on Human Rights, Election and Institutional Reform chairman said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul had also agreed for the PSSC to study the Federal Constitution for related amendments.

The proceedings would also involve several high profile cases, Leong said.

This includes the acquittal of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and 1MDB former CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy for the alleged tampering of the auditor-general’s audit report on 1MDB, former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin being acquitted of four charges involving abuse of power and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi being granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal for his graft cases.

“The PSSC finds that the outcome of said high-profile cases gives a perception that the Attorney General’s Chambers has interfered.

“Justice must be served according to the Federal Constitution,” Leong said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 12).

The PSSC, Leong said, would also be calling up several individuals.

They are Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, attorney-general Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, former attorney-general Tan Sri Idris Harun, Legal Affairs Division director-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud and the lawyers who represented Ahmad Zahid.

“The proceedings are done under the Terms of Reference in this PSSC.

“We hope the proceedings give the involved stakeholders an opportunity to provide a detailed explanation.

“This will aid the PSSC in giving recommendations to the government when it comes to institutional reforms,” Leong added.
