Road markings for dangerous Federal Highway exit to Subang Jaya

Motorists taking the Subang Jaya exit on Federal Highway from the direction of Shah Alam and Klang will soon see additional road markings in an effort to reduce accidents there.

The exit consists of a sharp bend that leads to a fork in the road, with one branching off to Subang Jaya and the other to USJ.

Subang Jaya city councillor Ken Chia said the 40kph speed limit would be painted at the entrance to the 180m stretch to alert motorists to slow down.

“In 2018, the local council’s Engineering Department painted the words ‘SS’ and ‘USJ’ to denote the direction on the forked road.

Motorists exiting Federal Highway onto a forked road, one leading toSubang Jaya and the other to USJ.

“But accidents still occur, so we plan to have additional markings at the start of the exit to warn drivers before the road diverges,” he said.

He added that Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) also wanted drivers to observe the speed limit to avoid collisions at the fork in the road.

“I will bring this issue to the infrastructure and public amenities sub-committee meeting.

“We will discuss if MBSJ can instal concrete barriers along the road median to improve safety,” said Chia.

Subang Jaya and USJ residents have witnessed numerous accidents in this area.

Usain Mohamed Peer, 53, said motorists entering the sharp bend often had to abruptly stop or reduce their speed.

“This happens during peak hours and it gets especially dangerous during heavy rain.

“I suggest MBSJ instal reflective raised studs to mark lanes and keep drivers from straying into the next lane,” he said.

He also said a forked road sign must be added to warn drivers that the stretch of road would split into two.

Student Mastura Moen, 25, said the curved stretch at the fork was too short and often confused drivers, causing them to switch lanes suddenly.

“Faded road lines as well as an absence of reflective markers and poor lighting make it worse at night,” she added.

Social activist Devadass Anjan said MBSJ and Public Works Department (JKR) must coordinate to have proper road signage before the bend to guide motorists accordingly.

“As an immediate measure, having the words ‘SS’ and ‘USJ’ painted in white with arrows 50m before the exit and again at the road bend will improve the situation,” he said.

Chia, who received complaints on this matter, visited the site earlier this week and met with MBSJ road unit engineer Syahizam Ahmad Niza to get a better understanding of the problem.
