Roads to be closed for National Day prep

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 22 roads will be closed in Putrajaya from 5am till 11am in conjunction with the National Day celebration on Aug 31.

In addition to this, 18 roads here will be closed from 5am till 11am on Aug 27 till Aug 29 for rehearsals of the celebration.

New Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said the roads will be closed in stages on Aug 31 to ensure that the celebration and its preparations run smoothly.

“We expect up to 100,000 visitors to attend the celebration at Dataran Putrajaya on Aug 31. We will deploy 1,764 police officers and personnel from Aug 25 till 31, including for the rehearsals and the eve of National Day,” he told a press conference at the KL police headquarters yesterday.

Comm Allaudeen advised the public to plan their travels accordingly on Aug 31.

“Those planning to attend the celebration should use public transport such as the MRT and Express Rail Link to avoid traffic congestion.

“There are shuttle buses available at Putrajaya Central Terminal to the venue,” he said.

For those planning to drive, there are about 10 parking areas available including in the vicinity of Masjid Tuanku Zainal Abidin, Tugu Millennium, MyFarm at Precinct 9 and Putrajaya International Convention Centre, he said.

Comm Allaudeen reminded the public not to fly drones at or near Dataran Putrajaya on Aug 31.

“Drones that have not been authorised by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) will be brought down,” he said.

Comm Allaudeen hoped that the public, especially those living and working in Putrajaya, would be mindful of the road closures.

“We hope they can plan their journeys and activities accordingly,” he said.

On National Day eve, Comm Allaudeen said the locations involved in Merdeka-related activities are Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Bukit Bintang.

“We are not planning to close any roads but we will direct traffic around those areas.

“For Dataran Merdeka, visitors will have to use Jalan Tun Perak to enter and Jalan Gereja to exit from 5pm onwards.

“We will have sufficient personnel deployed to ensure the safety of the public,” he said.

Fireworks displays are planned at Dataran Merdeka and KLCC, he added.
