Sabah to host Asia Triathlon Cup after 22 years

KOTA KINABALU: After a 22-year hiatus, the prestigious Asia Triathlon Cup will make a return to Sabah shores.

The endurance multi-sport event consisting of swimming, cycling and running is scheduled to take place at the Prince Philip Park in Tanjung Aru here on Nov 11.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said the last time Sabah played host to the event was during the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC) Triathlon Asian Championships in 2001.

She said the return showed Sabah’s enduring commitment to the sport of triathlon and its standing as a premier sports destination in the region.

“The return of the Asia Triathlon Cup after 22 years to Sabah is a testament to the region’s growing prominence in the world of triathlon and sports tourism,” she said during a press conference at her office here on Monday.

“With its stunning natural landscapes and warm hospitality, Sabah is poised to once again leave an indelible mark on the global triathlon community.

“The event will also showcase the city’s capability to host international sporting events of this magnitude,” she added.

XMultisport Event was appointed as the organiser of the event by the Malaysia Triathlon Association, sanctioned by World Triathlon.

Asia Triathlon serves as the governing body for the Olympic sport of triathlon and all related multi-sports in Asia, officially recognised by World Triathlon as the continental confederation for the continent.

Liew said the Asia Triathlon Cup was expected to draw a diverse and talented field of athletes from across Asia and beyond, offering them a challenging and exhilarating competition experience.

This event would further reinforce Kota Kinabalu’s reputation as a premier sports destination, known for its scenic beauty and sporting excellence, she said.

Malaysia Triathlon Association president Tony Tan Beng Hong said they were confident of XMultisport Event organising a successful Asia Triathlon Cup.

Registration will remain open until Oct 16.
