State polls: Three-way fight for Kota Anggerik, Batu Tiga

SHAH ALAM: The Kota Anggerik state assembly will see a three-cornered fight between the incumbent and two new faces.

Mechanical engineer Najwan Halimi, 38, (PH-PKR) will be defending his seat against businessman Mohamed Sukri Omar, 37, (PN-PAS) and lawyer Azad Akbar Khan, 35, (Muda).

Their candidacies were accepted by returning officer Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid at the Dewan Besar Tanjung MBSA, Section 19.

In the 14th General Election in 2018, Najwan won the seat with a 17,004-vote majority in a three-cornered fight.

“I had done my best. Voters want to see whether the candidate or incumbent has served the constituency and its people,” he told reporters here on Saturday (July 29).

Scores of supporters stood outside the nomination centre to voice their support for their candidates.

Meanwhile, the Batu Tiga state assembly seat in Shah Alam will see a three-cornered fight between Datuk Seri Rina Harun, 50 (PN-Bersatu); lawyer Saiyidah Izzati Nur Razak Maideen, who is also known as Cheda Razak, 35, (Muda) and an adjunct associate professor with a private university Danial Al-Rashid, 37, (PH-Amanah).

Rina, who is also Bersatu’s Srikandi chief, was defeated for the Sepang parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election.

Cheda said she would focus on flood mitigation as floods were a big issue in the area.

Rina said her focus would be on bread and butter issues that are affecting the people.

Inside the nomination hall, candidates showed the returning officer their approval letter on the use of the symbol of the party they are representing while submitting their papers.

Their candidacies were accepted by Returning Officer Asmah Mohd Zin at the same hall.

Kota Anggerik has a total of 95,104 voters while Batu Tiga has 75,486 voters.

Early voting is set for Aug 8, followed by polling on Aug 12.
