State sets new world record for largest Johor-style fried noodles

JOHOR BARU: It took 86 chefs and over 667kg of noodles to set a new world record for the largest Johor-style fried noodles here.

The effort made it into the Guinness World Records (GWR) when the participants gathered at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here to fry the noodles.

GWR adjudicator Sonia Ushirogochi declared the attempt a success, which is held in conjunction with the World Chefs Championship on Thursday (May 16).

“The minimum requirement that has been set is about 365.8kg and we have weighed all 35 containers and I can confirm that the weight is 667.7kg, which is a new Guinness World Record in cooking Johor-style fried noodles,” she said.

This is the second time the event made its way into the GWR as last year, they cooked 365kg of flat rice noodles to set a new world record for the largest serving of char koay teow.

Meanwhile, Tourism Johor director Sharil Nizam Abdul Rahim said that the chefs were divided into 20 kitchens and each kitchen has about four to five cooks to fry the noodles.

“Having the World Chefs Championship here is the best opportunity for the state to increase its gastronomy tourism sector to a much higher level.

“The championship sees a total of 1,790 participants including from countries such as China, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada including locals,” he said adding that the event was being held between Thursday to this Saturday (May 18).

The event is officiated by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi who said that the state government would continue to hold the championship here again next year.

“Last year, the championship was able to attract over 1,400 participants. This time around, it has managed to garner more than 1,700 participants and hopefully next year, we can get 2,500 chefs to come here, “ he added.

Onn Hafiz said Johor, Indonesia and Singapore have similar food but there were minor differences in terms of sweetness and spices but it is the food that makes us unique, where everyone is regarded as one big family.

“In Johor, we have lots of tasty food such as Laksa Johor, Asam Pedas, Burasak and Nasi Beryani. I wish the participants to have a healthy competition and a pleasant stay here,” he added.
