Stop thinking of toppling govt, we broke green wave by winning Selangor, Gobind tells PN

SHAH ALAM: Pakatan Harapan halted the “green wave” of Perikatan Nasional when the former won the Selangor state election, said Selangor DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo.

The Damansara MP said that this was despite Perikatan’s boast that it would win five states including Selangor, in the recent six state elections in Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Kedah, Penang and Negri Sembilan held in August.

“The opposition thinks that there is a ‘wave’ to raise them. They think that there is a possibility of government change within the next five years.

“I tell them that there is no such possibility for the next five years,” said Gobind in his opening speech at the Selangor DAP annual convention 2023 held here on Sunday (Nov 26).

He was alluding to the term “green wave” which has been used to signify the rise of the Malay votes for Perikatan in the last general election and state elections.

Perikatan leaders have also stated recently at PAS and Bersatu annual general meetings on the likelihood of a government change before the current electoral term is up.

He further pointed out that the current Unity Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is a stable one with strong cooperation from all of its component parties.

“With Barisan Nasional, the cooperation is strong and we can now focus on economic recovery.

“We cannot deny that in the past year, the government is stable as compared to the unstable politicking in the five years prior to the 15th General Election, where it has affected all areas.

“We see how the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has carried out his job by attending the ‘Prime Minister Question Hour’ every Tuesday in Dewan Rakyat to reply to the questions posed.

“This shows that we have a PM who dares to face the challenges and reply to the questions from the opposition,” said Gobind.

He also told Selangor DAP delegates at the convention that despite being part of the Federal Government, DAP members need to work harder to get more members and communicate party successes to the grassroots.

“We have to ensure we have the right media play to publicise the successes of our party and our elected representatives.

“We must carry on the good work we have done as voters judge us by what we have delivered to gauge what we can deliver for the next five years.

“We have to communicate and interact with the young voters. In the next five years, the now-13 and 14- year olds would be able to vote. What are our plans for them?

“As a party, how can we strengthen the grassroots and be able to attract new members?

“It is not easy to keep the support we have. The success and failure of DAP depends on us as the win we have gotten is just the beginning,” said Gobind.
