Tamil new year celebration in KL’s Little India unites communities

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tamil New Year celebration at Little India, Brickfields, this year proved to be a special one as it was collaboratively organised by the main Hindu and Tamil associations in the country.

Deputy National Unity Minister K. Saraswathy emphasised the importance of such events, which foster understanding among communities.

“The event, coordinated by 40 associations and the Brickfields Rukun Tetangga (RT) under our ministry, should continue to promote unity,” she told BK at the celebration held near the main fountain Sunday (April 14).

She expressed hope that such grand celebrations would continue next year.

Klang MP V. Ganabatirau expressed his delight at witnessing the joint celebration organised by multiple Tamil and Hindu associations, adding that it was heartening to see younger generations embracing and valuing traditional practices.

Malaysia Hindu Dharma Maamandram president A. Radhakrishnan highlighted the association’s efforts to involve younger generations in the annual event.

“Over the past five years, we have promoted traditional practices like Urumi Mellam among youths and society,” he said.

Radhakrishnan said this year’s Tamil New Year celebration exceeded the association’s expected visitor count, with over 2,000 people joining the event from 2.30pm to 7.30pm.

He also thanked the local residents for their cooperation and understanding.

“We have requested the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to recognise Tamil New Year as a prominent celebration of the Indian community in the country,” he added, noting its potential to boost economic growth through increased tourist participation.

Radhakrishnan also announced plans for an even larger celebration next year.

The collaborative event, organised by Hindu and Tamil organisations such as Malaysia Hindu Sangam, Hindu Sevai Sangam, Hindu Dharma Maamandram and the Brickfields Business Community, showcased Tamil heritage items and traditional activities, including Uri Aditthal, Mayil Attam, Kollatam, Urumi Mellam and Silambam.

Tourists from Sweden, Australia, Germany and the United States also joined the festivities. – BK
