Thailand, Indonesia top auto exports to Vietnam

HANOI: In the first seven months of 2023, Vietnam imported nearly 80,000 completely-built-up (CBU) cars of all kinds, with a total value of US$1.87bil, an increase of 2.4% in quantity and 0.1% in value compared to the same period last year.

During that period, Vietnam purchased 36,087 vehicles from Thailand, an increase of 45.2% in quantity with an import turnover of US$762.2mil.

In July alone, 3,714 units were imported from Thailand, with a value of US$84mil.

In the first seven months, Thailand exported the most cars to Vietnam.

The average value of vehicles imported from Thailand was US$21,000 (493 million dong) per unit.

Imported vehicles from Thailand are now preferred by Vietnamese consumers and include the Toyota Corolla Cross, Camry, Corolla Altis and Fortuner, as well as the Ford Everest, Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30 and CX-3, and Forester Subaru.

The number of cars imported from Indonesia in July ranked second with 3,520 units, valued at US$47.85mil

In the January to July period, Indonesia exported 29,498 vehicles to Vietnam at a cost of US$399.63mil.

The average price of cars imported from Indonesia was US$13,500 (318 million dong) per unit.

Third in the ranking for July was China with 591 vehicles, valued at US$26mil, and 6,420 units for the seven months, with a turnover of US$250mil.

The average price of car imported from China in July was US$39,000 per unit.

Most of the imported vehicles are trucks and specialised vehicles used in the construction industry.

As a result, in the first seven months of 2023, more than 72,000 vehicles were imported into Vietnam from Thailand, Indonesia and China, accounting for 90.2% of the country’s total CBU imports.

In 2022, the Vietnamese auto market imported a record 173,467 cars, with a total value of US$3.84bil. Also, in 2022, Indonesia and Thailand were the two largest import markets. In particular, Indonesia surpassed Thailand in terms of imported cars, but Thailand still ranks number one in terms of value.

In 2022, Vietnam imported 72,671 units valued at more than US$1bil from Indonesia and 72,032 vehicles from Thailand valued at US$1.43bil.
