Tripartite MOU signed to rebuild SK Assumption as an international school

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A tripartite memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed to rebuild Sekolah Kebangsaan Assumption, following its closure in 2022.

SK Assumption, founded in the 1930s in Butterworth, was in operation for 89 years.

The Education Ministry closed the school in February 2022 as the owner of the school’s site, Sri Avenue Sdn Bhd, had requested for the return of its land.

The MOU between the Titular Roman Catholic Bishop of Penang, the Assumption Butterworth Alumni Association (Abaa) and Wing International Education Group Sdn Bhd (WIE), will see the rebirth of Assumption as an international school with a heart for the needy.

The MOU was signed by the Vicar General of Northern Deanery, Henry Louis representing the Titular Roman Catholic Bishop of Penang, Abaa honorary secretary Mohd Amin Aminuddin Baqy, and WIE senior executive director Shawn Yee.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who witnessed the signing, congratulated Abaa for their unwavering dedication and commitment to reviving the Assumption name and heritage.

Chow also announced an allocation of RM50,000 from the state government for the construction of a new school block.

“We believe that education is the cornerstone of progress and we are dedicated to ensuring that education is accessible to all.

“I can assure you that both the Federal Government and the Penang government will provide our best efforts to create a caring society and an enriching environment for growth in line with the Penang 2030 mission of ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abaa chairman Dr Anthony Ng said the association will be responsible for building a two-story classroom block with 24 rooms estimated at RM3mil, located on a 2.7-acre site along Jalan Kulim.

The construction is set to commence in the second quarter of 2024 and be completed by the end of quarter three of the same year, with classes scheduled to begin by the end of the year. – BK
