THE legacy of late DAP chairman Datuk Seri Karpal Singh will be commemorated with a walk and forum on May 19.

Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying said the “Legacy Walk” and “Special Tribute Forum” will be held to mark Karpal’s 10th death anniversary.

April 17 marked a decade since his death, she said.

“He will always be remembered as someone who fought for the people as a prominent, respected lawyer and politician.

“He helped raise the standard of living here and defended those who were oppressed – he was always fighting injustice,” she said in a press conference at the state DAP headquarters in Jalan Rangoon in George Town.

Hui Ying, who is Deputy Finance Minister, said the DAP decided to hold the events in remembrance of Karpal on his death anniversary.

“The Legacy Walk will take place in the morning along Persiaran Karpal Singh.”

The 2.7km walk in his honour will last about 30 minutes. Participants will receive a T-shirt and medal engraved with Karpal’s face.

This will be followed by a forum later that day to be attended by various DAP leaders including veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, national chairman Lim Guan Eng, secretary-general Anthony Loke and state chairman Chow Kon Yeow, in addition to Karpal’s family.

Hui Ying said they were targetting 1,000 participants for the walk and invite more to take part in both the walk and the forum.

After the walk, there is a plan to have a memorial service, she added.

Karpal was a prominent lawyer who earned the moniker “Tiger of Jelutong”, having served as Jelutong MP for 21 years.

He was also the Bukit Gelugor MP for 10 years and was a human rights advocate.

Karpal died in April 2014 in a car accident. He was 74.

On May 19, the Legacy Walk will start at 7am along Persiaran Karpal Singh and the forum will take place at 2pm at Penang Marriott Hotel.
